The Expired Ruling Tree Has Rotted from Both Ends
Mohammed Muzaffar Abdulkarim – Activist
As is abundantly clear to every person in Kurdistan, the political agenda of both ruling families Talabani and Barzani has brought nothing but suffering, exploitation, and betrayal to the Kurdish cause. Aside from hardship, crisis, and the selling of Kurdish land to foreigners, there has been no meaningful achievement.
In the most recent phase of the salary crisis which has persisted for over a decade both families have continued to inflict poverty and injustice upon the people of Kurdistan. Every day, they trade another false pride or failed legacy at the expense of the working class of Southern Kurdistan.
By many credible assessments, the Kurdistan Region now faces two dangerous and destructive paths, both shaped by the expired and failed regional administration. The situation for ordinary citizens will continue to deteriorate and worsen. Simultaneously, this expired cabinet is facing intensified scrutinyfrom both the Federal Government of Iraq and the people of the Region. Despite multiple rounds of negotiations, no agreements have been reached.
Now, the expired Regional Government faces a critical crossroads: either accept the full set of conditions imposed by Baghdad for the release of public sector salaries effectively surrendering the Region’s autonomy or refuse, which will lead to widespread unrest, hunger, and instability.
The Kurdistan Region is rapidly approaching the point where its very existence is in question, as its rulers fail to protect public welfare and the national interest. The people grow more angry, impoverished, and disillusioned with each passing day.
The Kurdish people rightly say:
“The ruling tree is rotten from both ends.”
Experience is the final card they hold yet the ruling authorities in the Kurdistan Region show no intention of reform or meaningful change.
