PUK Leader Arrested on Terrorism Charges Amid Security Corruption
Ata Sarawi, a former high-ranking member of the PUK, was arrested on terrorism charges linked to the Sarchnar bombing, raising concerns about security and military corruption in the Kurdistan Region.
Ata Sarawi, a former member of the leadership of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), was arrested on charges of terrorism in connection with the Sarchnar bombing. The arrest took place at 4:00 am on Friday, July 5, 2024, at Sulaimani airport. According to his son, Peshraw, Ata Sarawi was detained due to alleged passport issues and an unspecified complaint.
A senior security official confirmed that Sarawi is charged under Article 2 of the Counter-Terrorism Law, with a complaint filed by the Sulaimani Asayish Directorate. Peshraw Sarawi, speaking to Kurdish Media in a press conferance, asserted that his father’s arrest was unjust, claiming there were no actual issues with his passport and that the source of the complaint remains unknown.
The charges against Ata Sarawi relate to a car explosion in the Sarchnar neighborhood of Sulaimani on April 19. It is alleged that Sarawi orchestrated the explosion of his own car, leading to the terrorism charges against him.
In a broader context, Kurdfile reports that it is not uncommon in the Kurdistan Region for former loyal members of the Kurdish leadership to be accused of crimes when they are no longer needed, often to protect leadership secrets or eliminate potential threats. This case highlights the ongoing concerns about security and military corruption within the region.
