PUK Forces Accused of Torture in Ranya Prison, Human Rights Commission Blocked
Ranya, Kurdistan Region – January 30, 2025
Reports have emerged alleging that PUK-affiliated forces raided Ranya Security Prison multiple times, masked and intoxicated, brutally torturing inmates. The abuse was reportedly so severe that a doctor had to be called to save prisoners’ lives.
The Kurdistan Regional Human Rights Commission attempted to visit the prison to investigate but was denied access, despite confirming the allegations with the Raperin Asayish security director. This obstruction raises serious concerns about accountability and human rights violations within Kurdistan’s security forces.
With growing reports of impunity, there is mounting pressure on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) and international bodies to investigate these abuses. If left unaddressed, such incidents will further erode public trust in the region’s justice system and reinforce a culture of lawlessness among security forces.
