Iraqi Prime Minister Faces Protests in London Over Immigration Issues
London, UK – January 15, 2025
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani’s visit to London today was met with protests concerning the status of Iraqi immigrants in the United Kingdom. Prime Minister Al-Sudani met with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer at Number 10 Downing Street to discuss various bilateral matters, including the situation of Iraqi nationals residing in the UK.
Outside the gates of Downing Street, a group of Iraqi activists gathered to express their concerns about the potential implications of the leaders’ discussions. The protesters emphasized the precarious circumstances faced by many Iraqi immigrants, who fear returning to Iraq due to political persecution or severe social issues that could endanger their lives.
While the meeting also encompassed economic cooperation, including a $15 billion agreement between the two nations, the demonstrators focused solely on immigration matters. They criticized both governments for not adequately addressing the humanitarian needs of those who fled Iraq seeking safety and stability.
As Prime Minister Al-Sudani departed Downing Street, tensions escalated when activists threw eggs at his convoy, underscoring the frustration and mistrust many Iraqi immigrants feel toward their government’s handling of these issues.
The UK and Iraq have not yet disclosed the full details of their discussions regarding immigration, leaving many in the Iraqi diaspora anxious about potential policy changes that could affect their status and safety.
