Badinan Prisoner Journalist Released After Three Years
Kurdfile: Journalist Qareman Shukri Released After Three Years of Imprisonment
Journalist Qareman Shukri, who had been imprisoned in Badinan for three years, was released today. His detention and subsequent release come amidst ongoing international pressure on the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to address human rights violations.
Qareman Shukri was arrested in January 2021 by Duhok security forces and sentenced to seven years in prison. His case has drawn significant attention due to his father, Shukri Zaynedin Rekani, a fellow journalist who died under mysterious circumstances in Badinan.
The international community has been vocal in urging KRG authorities to release prisoners in Badinan, citing concerns over the suppression of free speech and political dissent.
