Areen Barzani’s “Checkmate” Post Exposes the Personal Nature of KDP-PUK Rivalry
Kurdfile London
Areen Barzani, the eldest son of Kurdistan Regional Government Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, shared an image on his Instagram account, which has millions of followers, declaring “checkmate” following the convening of the Kurdistan Parliament.
The rivalry between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) is becoming increasingly personal, with posts of this kind intended to humiliate PUK leader Bafel Talabani.
This has little to do with reactivating a legal institution, and anyone arguing otherwise is ignoring the region’s recent political history. In 2015, when the Kurdistan Parliament moved to challenge the authority of Masoud Barzani, then president of the Kurdistan Region and father of Masrour Barzani, the KDP forcibly shut it down for three years. Neither father nor son has faced any legal consequences. Claims that parliament is treated as a central institution in the Kurdistan Region have little basis in the region’s political reality.
The latest development must be understood in this context. Although Areen Barzani is only in his twenties, he is Masrour Barzani’s eldest son, and insiders say his father listens closely to him and is heavily influenced by his views.
Details such as these reveal far more about the nature of the rivalry and the internal dynamics of power than the official statements issued by either party, which offer little insight into what is actually taking place.
