A Risk That Could Reshape the Kurdistan Region

Diyar Harki – Founder of KurdFile

I have endured significant verbal abuse regarding Shaswar Abdulwahid, yet in my opinion, this remains a courageous move.

The New Generation Movement had begun to fade and dissolve; Shaswar was no longer able to expand its influence because the party, much like its counterparts, lacked a clear strategy and failed to secure the trust of the public.

I believe our region is currently undergoing profound transformations, and the unification of these two parties may well be a facet of these changes. This agreement could potentially lead to a shift in the governance of the Kurdistan Region; however, in my view, such a transition is impossible without external influence, decision-making, and support.

It seems to me that Shaswar has essentially attached a political bomb to himself; either he will bring about his own total collapse, or he will open a new gateway for the stifled democratic process in the Kurdistan Region.

We must not forget that the Kurdistan Region is an integral part of the evolving map of the Middle East; its issues must be resolved, one way or another.

At present, all eyes are on the Kurdish opposition. Will they align with these two forces to form a 50+1 majority? I find it unlikely that the Kurdistan Islamic Union (KIU) will take this step. In my opinion, this represents the party’s greatest weakness — its inability to engage in high-stakes conflict and its tendency to appease both near and distant rivals. Consequently, the challenge ahead for Bafel and Shaswar will not be an easy one.
