UK Cities Witness Protests Demanding Justice for Murdered Kurdish Journalist Kawa Garmyani
On December 5, demonstrations organized by Dakok Organization took place in several UK cities, including London, Manchester, Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, and Newcastle, to honor the memory of Kawa Garmyani. The Kurdish journalist, murdered in Kalar, Iraqi Kurdistan, on this day in 2013, was renowned for exposing corruption and abuse of power. His assassination has long been attributed to forces linked to the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), sparking demands for justice that remain unmet.
Protesters carried banners and chanted slogans, demanding accountability and an end to impunity for those responsible for Garmyani’s killing. “Kawa Garmyani’s blood symbolizes the price of truth in Kurdistan,” said a spokesperson for Dakok Organization in Cardiff. “We will not let his sacrifice be forgotten.”
The protests highlighted widespread frustration over the lack of justice in the case and broader concerns about press freedom in the Kurdistan Region. Activists emphasized the need for international pressure to ensure an independent investigation into the murder.
Garmyani’s legacy as a fearless journalist continues to inspire calls for reform, with protesters vowing to keep his memory alive and to fight for justice in his name
