Citizen Killed by Neighbor in Khabat near Erbil

A tragic incident in Khabat highlights the deadly consequences of tribal disputes and widespread illegal weapons in Kurdistan.

In a horrifying incident in Khabat, a man named Dildar was killed by his neighbor following a prolonged dispute. According to Dildar’s relatives, the two families had a disagreement over a child several months ago, which they believed had been resolved. However, tensions resurfaced, leading to a fatal altercation. The neighbor, after an initial fight, returned the next morning, knocked on Dildar’s door, and shot him, killing Dildar and injuring his four-year-old child.

This incident underscores the dangers of a society dominated by tribal reconciliations and the prevalence of illegal weapons. “Any country dominated by tribes and tribal reconciliation will always face killing, chaos, and disorder. As long as there are sheikhs and tribes, the Kurds will never benefit. Whoever makes peace with a murderer is guilty of murder,” said a local observer.

According to a report by the Iraqi Interior Ministry, there are more than 15 million illegal weapons in the hands of citizens. If we consider that 20% of these weapons are in the Kurdistan Region, that amounts to approximately 3 million illegal weapons in an area with a population close to 6 million people. This means that nearly one in every two citizens possesses an unlicensed weapon, creating a highly volatile environment.

Kurdfile: Both PUK and KDP presented weapons to their followers in different events in the past as a special gift, We think the message is clear!

The pervasive availability of illegal firearms combined with unresolved tribal conflicts results in frequent violent incidents, contributing to a cycle of bloodshed and fear. The lack of effective law enforcement and reliance on tribal justice only exacerbates the problem, making it clear that significant changes are needed to ensure safety and justice for all citizens.
