Report: KDP and PUK Accused of Attempting to Influence New Generation MPs

Tensions have risen between the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) amid accusations that both parties are trying to pressure or as some allege, “buy” members of the New Generation Movement’s parliamentary bloc.

New Generation officials strongly deny the accusations, describing them as part of an ongoing political campaign targeting the movement. Although New Generation leader Shaswar Abdulwahid remains in prison, the movement’s organizational structure and media channels continue functioning and publicly addressing political developments, even as KDP and PUK figures call for the dissolution of New Generation’s parliamentary faction.

The KDP is attempting to secure the legal quorum needed to reconvene the Kurdistan Parliament without relying on the PUK. As a result, political attention has shifted heavily toward the New Generation MPs and whether they will remain united or show signs of internal division.

A senior New Generation source, speaking anonymously, stated that the movement’s MPs are unified and that “no internal split has occurred,” calling the claims from both parties part of a coordinated pressure strategy that they refuse to accept.

According to the PUK, the KDP has managed to draw several New Generation MPs toward its political position. The KDP, meanwhile, believes some New Generation MPs have moved closer to the PUK. The New Generation Movement rejects both narratives.

The same New Generation source noted that the KDP initially launched propaganda through affiliated media channels, followed by similar messaging from the PUK, but stressed that New Generation MPs remain committed to the movement’s decisions.

With each party accusing the other and New Generation denying any internal fracture, the prospects for holding a parliamentary session remain uncertain. Continued political disagreement between the KDP and PUK will likely determine whether parliament reconvenes—and may ultimately reveal the truth behind the competing claims and political maneuvering.
