He Was Killed for Telling the Truth”: Kurds in Manchester Demand Justice for Sorani Mama Hama

Manchester – July 21, 2025

Kurdish activists staged a protest outside the Iraqi Consulate in Manchester, marking the anniversary of the assassination of investigative journalist Sorani Mama Hama and condemning the deepening economic crisis in the Kurdistan Region.

Rebwar Abdullah declared, “We gathered today in memory of Sorani Mama Hama, who was assassinated in front of his own house.” He warned, “The situation in Kurdistan is extremely critical and unstable.”

Protesters linked Mama Hama’s killing to his fearless exposure of corruption, calling it a symbol of how truth is silenced in Kurdistan. They also denounced the failure of both the KRG and the Iraqi government to pay public sector salaries for over 80 days, saying it has pushed families to the brink of collapse.

Demonstrators carried placards reading “Justice for Soran Mama Hama” and “Stop Starving Kurdistan,” demanding international attention to both the political repression and economic devastation back home.
