Joint Statement from a Collective of Activists, Journalists, Critics, and Dissident Teachers Regarding the Assault on Human Rights Defender Shwan Saber Mustafa

We, as a collective group of activists, journalists, critics, and dissident teachers, declare with one unified voice and unwavering conviction:
We strongly condemn the violent assault on human rights defender Shwan Sabir.

It is clear to all that on July 17, within the city limits of Erbil, a space that should represent stability and calm an unjust and criminal act was committed. In a brutal and mafia-style attack, with no regard for human dignity, freedom, or democracy, Shwan Saber a civil activist and defender of rights was violently assaulted.

Such actions fall squarely within the framework of intimidation and a direct assault on the dignity of peaceful and civic-minded individuals, many of whom have dedicated their lives to democracy, freedom, and raising public awareness.

Our deep and ongoing concern lies in the fact that, time and again, no one is ever held accountable for these types of attacks not for days, months, or even years.

We therefore demand that the relevant security authorities immediately identify and bring to justice the perpetrators and those behind this violent act.
If not, we will be forced to raise this issue on international platforms, translating this statement into major world languages and submitting it to foreign missions and human rights organizations who can influence the course of justice and the protection of fundamental rights.

We wish Shwan Sabir a swift and full recovery, and express our full solidarity and support for his courage and cause.
