Kufan Nuri Tahir, a resident of the Malta neighborhood in Duhok’s city center, succumbed to her injuries after spending four days in the hospital. The 35-year-old mother of three was attacked and set ablaze by her 45-year-old brother on the evening of November 27th.
Dr. Shirin Anwar, director of the Duhok Burns Hospital, confirmed to Rudaw that Kufan died today due to the severity of her burns.
The tragic incident stemmed from a domestic dispute between Kufan’s brother and his wife, which escalated when Kufan’s sisters became involved. According to Rudaw media, the conflict culminated in her brother violently beating her and then setting her on fire.
Duhok police reported that the suspect fled the scene but was apprehended hours later in the Chamanke district of Amedi.
Kurdfile states that many social incidents like this occur due to the lack of judicial processes and the tendency to handle them outside the court system. These matters are often resolved by clans and elders, perpetuating a cycle of violence and impunity. This incident highlights a severe case of domestic violence and draws attention to the ongoing issue of violence against women in the region.
