Journalist Bashdar Baziani Faces Threats and Arrest Warrants

Prominent journalist Bashdar Baziani is under threat, facing multiple arrest warrants issued by authorities in the Kurdistan Region. In a recent Facebook post, Baziani revealed that he has three outstanding arrest warrants and is being pursued by the police and the courts without proper adherence to the region’s journalism laws.

“I have three arrest warrants and have been pleading with the governor, police, and base since evening to prevent the issuance of an arrest warrant. I haven’t killed anyone!” Baziani wrote. He further expressed his frustration, stating, “I have another order from the governor directed at the security forces. I don’t understand when the rulers of this country will realize that they should not misuse Article 2 of the mobile phone law against journalists. We have our own law, Law No. 35 of 2007.”

Kurdfile, a leading Kurdish news outlet, highlighted the ongoing dangers faced by journalists in the Kurdistan Region. “Journalists with influential voices are always in danger,” Kurdfile reported, citing numerous instances of killings, intimidation, imprisonment, and false accusations against journalists during the region’s current administration.

The outlet called for collective efforts to raise awareness and protect journalists like Baziani, emphasizing that the courage and spirit of brave journalists must be upheld and defended in the face of growing threats.
