How Much Does General Arin Barzani Study?

Arin Masrour Barzani, the eldest son of the Kurdistan Regional Government’s (KRG) Prime Minister, is currently enrolled in military courses at the prestigious Royal Sunderland Academy in the UK. His education, funded at significant cost, raises questions about the use of public resources and nepotism.

The Royal Sunderland Academy, located near London, has been a cornerstone of British military training for over two centuries. While British citizens enjoy free tuition and stipends at this academy, the story is different for international students. The academy has become a hub for Gulf princes, with countries like the UAE, Bahrain, and Oman donating millions annually to secure spots for their heirs.

In addition to the official tuition and living costs, these countries contribute substantial amounts to the academy’s emergency fund, ensuring their children’s admission. This practice underscores the financial commitment required for non-British students to attend this elite institution.

Arin Masrour Barzani, the eldest son of KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, has been attending military courses at the Royal Sunderland Academy for several months, along with two other relatives. According to 2014 Ministry of Defence figures, Arin’s tuition fees alone amount to approximately $115,000 per academic year. This figure excludes donations to the college and covers only basic expenses such as accommodation, health insurance, car insurance, meals, and hospitality.

The substantial investment in Arin’s education signifies a broader message from the Barzani family to the Kurdish population. It suggests that regardless of public opinion or electoral outcomes, the Barzanis are determined to maintain their influence and leadership through the next generation.
