Arrest Warrant Issued for Adham Barzani on Charges of Undermining Regional Security

An arrest warrant has been issued for Adham Barzani, cousin of KDP leader Massoud Barzani, by the Erbil Security Investigation Court. He faces charges of undermining the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region.

In a significant development, the Erbil Security Investigation Court has issued an arrest warrant for Adam Barzani, the cousin of Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) leader Massoud Barzani. The warrant was issued under Article 1 of the Kurdistan Regional Security Council Law 2003 , which charges Adham Barzani with activities that undermine the security and stability of the region. If convicted, he faces a sentence ranging from six years to life imprisonment.

The court’s order has been disseminated to all security directorates and border crossings in Erbil and Duhok, indicating the seriousness of the charges. Adam Barzani, who has been away from Erbil and Duhok since 2022 to protect his life, recently announced his intention to form a new political party and participate in the upcoming elections scheduled for October. However, according to the court’s decision, he cannot proceed with his political ambitions until his case is resolved.

The court’s decision has sparked widespread concern and criticism. Kurdfile reports that the Barzani family is known for using the courts to silence their opponents, often leading to imprisonment or exile on dubious grounds. This ongoing practice has forced thousands of people to leave Kurdistan in search of safety and justice.

Kurdfile emphasizes the broader implications of this case, noting, “The Barzani family does not allow its opponents to be comfortable. It constantly uses the courts to imprison or deport them on unfair grounds. This is the reason why thousands of people have left Kurdistan.”

This incident adds to the growing unrest in the Kurdistan Region, where accusations of political manipulation and abuse of power are becoming increasingly common. The international community and human rights organizations are closely monitoring the situation, calling for transparency and fairness in handling such cases.
