Arin Barzani’s Controversial Appointment Sparks Public Outrage
The recent appointment of Arin Masrour Barzani, son of Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, as “Head of the Gulf Cooperation Council Unit” has ignited widespread criticism and accusations of nepotism. The position, which has not been officially recognized within the legal or administrative framework of the KRG, has raised serious concerns about transparency and governance.
The controversy came to light after Latifah bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the Dubai Institute of Culture and Arts, revealed her meeting with Arin Masrour Barzani on her X platform. She highlighted discussions on potential cultural and economic collaborations, but the KRG has yet to provide any official details about the existence or purpose of the Gulf Cooperation Council Unit.
Ali Hama Salih, a prominent member of the Kurdistan Parliament, weighed in on the matter during an exclusive discussion with Kurdfile. “There is no such position in the KRG,” he stated. “By what law or regulation has this role been established? If it’s legitimate, why was it not presented to the parliament? And why, of all people, is it given to the Prime Minister’s son?”
Salih’s comments reflect growing discontent among politicians and the public, who see this appointment as yet another example of favoritism within the Barzani-led administration. Critics argue that positions of influence are increasingly being awarded based on family ties rather than merit, undermining the principles of accountability and equality in governance.
This incident has intensified calls for reform, as many believe that such practices erode public trust and perpetuate a system of entrenched power within the Barzani family. The lack of transparency and meritocracy in the KRG remains a critical issue, further damaging its credibility both locally and internationally.
