Iraqi MP Criticizes Rampant Issuance of Diplomatic Iraqi Passports
Iraqi MP Mohammed Khafaji has condemned the indiscriminate distribution of diplomatic passports, revealing that over 4,000 have been issued to unworthy recipients. Khafaji called for restrictions on the Foreign Minister’s authority, emphasizing that the once prestigious passports have become tools for corrupt officials and their families.
Diplomatic passports, symbols of national dignity and international representation, have been degraded by widespread misuse in Iraq. Mohammed Khafaji, a member of the Legal Committee of the Iraqi Parliament, has brought to light the alarming extent of this issue. In a recent interview with Al-Ahram, Khafaji disclosed that more than 4,000 diplomatic passports have been issued to individuals who do not merit such status.
Khafaji pointed out that diplomatic passports, traditionally reserved for high-ranking officials and diplomats, are now being handed out indiscriminately, even to officials after their retirement. “Issuing diplomatic passports to officials after the completion of their work and retirement is a disaster,” he stated, highlighting the undermining of the passport’s integrity.
The issue extends to the families of officials, with passports being granted to their children and other relatives. This practice has transformed diplomatic passports into mere commodities, further eroding their significance.
According to Khafaji, the current Foreign Minister Fuad Hussain who is the right hand of Barzani KDP leader wields excessive power in issuing these passports under the guise of public interest. He argued that these powers must be curtailed to prevent further misuse and restore the dignity of diplomatic passports. “The Foreign Minister should be held accountable for this situation, and his powers in issuing diplomatic passports must be restricted,” Khafaji insisted.
Adding to the controversy are rumors circulating in the media about diplomatic passports being issued to social media influencers and “fashionista” celebrities. Khafaji promised a thorough investigation into these claims, asserting that if proven true, the Foreign Minister must bear full responsibility.
Kurdfile supports Khafaji’s call for stricter regulations and accountability in the issuance of diplomatic passports. The current situation reflects a broader issue of corruption and lack of oversight within the Iraqi government, impacting not only the country’s international reputation but also the trust of its citizens.
