The Intelligence and Military System of the Nation. In our region

Mohammed Abdalla Omer

Something has always been a question for me: when a state is established and when its goals grow bigger, it tries to make itself stronger. Therefore, it relies on some institutions and strategies. For the progress of a country, here I want to talk about two of those instruments and how they are used in the Kurdistan Region.

If we look at history, most of the time these two instruments have played a decisive role in unifying wars by relying on a few tanks, and it always goes back to the fact that it was for national goals. But if you look at the system of the Kurdistan Region, which is divided between two parties, it is completely the opposite of those principles that support strengthening a state.

For example, within these two parties there are intelligence and security agencies that, instead of protecting the country, their only function is to spy on those who act against the party, or those who want to freely criticize them, or those who demand their rights through demonstrations. These agencies work on arresting and disappearing those people.

And within these parties, military forces are continuously built up, not for defending against outside countries, but only to further strengthen their authority in the regions they control. For example, on October 16, these forces played no role, while the Hashd al-Shaabi entered the area with force and imposed its authority.

Therefore, the intelligence and military system in the Region is practiced in complete contradiction to all democratic principles. We can truly say it is a mafia-style system.
