Iraq Records Almost 200 Cases of Domestic Violence Against Men in 2025

Baghdad — Iraq’s Community Police Directorate, under the Ministry of Interior, has reported 196 cases of violence against men so far in 2025. (قناة الرشيد الفضائية)

According to Colonel Moayed Hadi, a spokesperson for the directorate, key drivers behind this rise include drug abuse, alcohol consumption, and worsening economic conditions. (قناه السومرية العراقية)

These abuses take various forms — from physical assault and verbal insults to men being forcibly removed from their homes. (dijlah.tv)

Encouragingly, the Community Police have already resolved 146 of these cases, and they expect to exceed 150 by the end of the year. (dijlah.tv)

For comparison, data from 2024 shows that 1,055 cases of domestic violence were reported against women, of which 682 were addressed by the Community Police. (قناة الرشيد الفضائية)

Hadi also highlighted troubling trends involving children, noting that many cases require complex investigations. These include harassment, forced begging, and confinement, which demand detailed follow-up. (قناة الرشيد الفضائية)

In the Kurdistan Region, men’s rights groups are also sounding the alarm. Burhan Ali, head of the Kurdistan Region Men’s Union, said that by May 2025, there had been 194 formal complaints of abuse by men against their spouses reported in the region. In the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, men’s rights organizations report a growing number of abuse cases involving sexual harassment, physical assault, and men being removed from their homes by their spouses or families.

Advocacy groups warn that many of these incidents go unreported due to social pressure and stigma, leaving victims without legal protection or support.
