Brother Takes Revenge in Prison, Highlights Kurdistan’s Justice
In a dramatic twist of justice, a man in Sulaimani prison attacked two inmates to avenge his brother’s murder, exposing glaring issues in Kurdistan’s security and legal systems.
The family of Jassim and Qasim Mamaqala is making headlines with an unusual story of revenge. Their brother, Aziz Qadir Ghafoor, managed to infiltrate Sulaimani prison and attack two inmates in a bid to avenge their brother Juma’s murder earlier this year. The incident underscores severe gaps in Kurdistan’s security and the population’s awareness of the law.
The Mamaqala family explained the dramatic events leading up to this prison attack. On January 18, 2024, in Chamchamal city, four armed men arrived at the home of Juma Qadir Ghafoor at 3 am. Without a word, the attackers, all brothers, gunned down Juma. Surveillance cameras captured the brutal incident, and the footage is available to the family, the investigating judge, and all security agencies in Chamchamal.
This morning, Aziz Qadir Ghafoor visited Sulaimani prison and identified the killers of his brother. Seizing the opportunity, he attacked two of them in an act of revenge. The Mamaqala family felt it necessary to explain this act to the public, emphasizing their grief and sense of injustice over Juma’s untimely death. Juma, a father of ten with two wives, had not committed any crime and was killed in cold blood when he opened the door to his attackers.
This bizarre turn of events has prompted Kurdfile to highlight the root cause of such vigilantism: systemic injustice. Those with power and influence in Kurdistan often receive protection from KDP and PUK judges, leaving ordinary citizens feeling helpless and driven to take the law into their own hands.
