Journalist Detained for Exposing Public Street Sale in Shiladze

A journalist in Shiladze has been detained for more than three days without bail after reporting on the sale of a public street, sparking concerns over press freedom in Kurdistan.

In Shiladze district, a journalist from the 7 ROJ media agency has been arrested by the mayor for revealing a case involving the sale of a public street for $2,500. Ahmad Shamki, a reporter covering the Amedi and Shiladze districts, has been detained for three days following his report on this controversial sale.

Suhaib Ahmad, the director of 7 ROJ Media Agency, confirmed that despite Shamki having substantial evidence to support his report, he was arrested on Wednesday due to a complaint filed by the district mayor. Efforts to secure Shamki’s release have been unsuccessful, and organizations that typically work for journalistic freedom, such as the Metro Center and other activists, have remained notably silent on the matter.

The director expressed frustration, noting that while these organizations frequently issue statements on less significant issues, they have neglected to address this blatant attack on press freedom. In response, 7 ROJ Media Agency has reached out to consulates, international organizations, and the Association for the Defense of Free Journalism in Iraq, seeking support and intervention.

This incident underscores the precarious situation journalists face in Kurdistan, where government actions increasingly threaten the free voice of the press.
